Important Attendance reminder!(An extract from the SSAA (NSW) Newsletter)
SSAA (NSW) is required to notify the Firearms Registry if you have not made sufficient attendances in accordance with the activities as indicated on your membership card.
For example, if your membership card indicates "Activity: H" that means that your SSAA membership is supporting your genuine reason to own and use a firearm for Recreational Hunting/Vermin Control. In this example, you must attend approved shooting range or hunting activity twice between April 1st
and March 31st each year to comply with the regulation. For compliance purposes always retain all your attendances slips.
If your attendance records are 2 or less you may receive a courtesy reminder from the SSAA (NSW) Inc. If your attendance record is incorrect, or you may have made attendances at another approved club, you should advise the Association in writing and/or provide proof i.e. with your attendance slips. This is to assist, because the Association is obliged to forward a list of non compliant members to the NSW Firearms Registry. Please take note: non-compliance could result in the loss of your
license.

A tip for gun cleaning!
Brad Anderson suggests to clean your centrefire rifles by first pouring boiling water through the barrel to get rid of excessive muck before using your other cleaning gear like Sweet's 7.62 solvent, which removes fouling from jacketed bullets/propellant, and Sweets Oil, for prolonging barrel life.
Mounting Horns or Antlers
If you want to
display your trophy antlers, then you need to know
how to mount them. There is nothing complicated about mounting
deer antlers. You will need a precut wooden board, drill, crews,
marker, glue and a hand saw.
Cut the antlers from the deer scull with
sufficient scull bone left to mount them later. Clean all tissues
from the bone, let dry and then bleach it. Drill 2 holes on the
scull and the board and neatly fasten the antlers. Use clear
lacquer to preserve bones wood and antlers
You can cover the base with felt or skin to make
it more presentable. How is a matter of your ability for art.
Alternatively spend some money and have a Taxidermist to do it
professionally.
Some good advice! Mind your used
Shell cases. If you can't use them again please don't leave them behind, dispose of them properly, or collect them for your club to be sold for scrap
SAFE
STORAGE OF FIREARMS AND EQUIPMENT
The Firearms Act sets out your responsibilities as a firearms owner in relation to safe storage. Different categories of
license require different levels of safe storage. However, across all
licenses and permit categories, the legislation provides that any person who possesses a firearm must take all reasonable precautions to ensure that the
firearm is stored safely.
FIREARM THEFT IN AUSTRALIA – LATEST REPORT
The Institute of Criminology released its latest report on firearm theft and again highlighted the fact that some licensed shooters are not storing their guns properly. The report found lax home security, people keeping weapons in unlocked cars and even under their pillows, contributed to an increase in the national gun theft rate. The damning comment from the report however, was "Many owners continued to demonstrate carelessness or negligence in securing unattended firearms, leaving them in unlocked or easily penetrated storage or making no perceived effort to conceal or safeguard the firearm at all".

To answer your question: "Can I buy a gun on the Internet"?
No! Firearms can ONLY be legally bought and sold through licensed firearms dealers, and only to licensed shooters who have a Permit to Acquire.
FERAL & VARMINT CONTROL
It's
a must! Feral animals need to be controlled, the damage done by them is
intolerable. The "extreme Greens" don't agree. Luckily the
Games Council of NSW and SSAA are doing a great job to reduce the
threat. Voluntary conservation hunters have removed 27000 feral animals since
2006, because Hunters are first in conservation. Young hunters do their share too, even if it means to go through rugged
country on private farmland to silently stalk ferals with a hunting bow and
arrows instead of a high powered rifle. Stephen
has been successful in humanly removing a few pests, as you can see
here.
A free alert service
about how to recognize and protect yourself from
INTERNET SCAM, SPAM, PHISHING, FRAUD, and CELL-PHONE DANGERS etc.
An interesting point about fraud is that it is a crime you decide on whether to participate, or not. Unfortunately, any “get rich quick” products are suspect at the get-go. On-line scams know no national borders or boundaries and they respect no investigative jurisdictions so it is difficult, if not impossible, to nail down the perpetrators. Con artists are very persuasive using all types of offers to lead you – and your money – away from common sense. “Education, good judgment, and a healthy does of skepticism are the best defense against becoming a victim.” It is best to follow the old adage “if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. ”The FBI encourages victims of cyber crime to contact their local FBI field office, or file a complaint online at www.IC3.gov.
Warning!Do not press 9 0 # on your phone for anyone. If you get a call from an individual identifying himself as an Telstra Service Technician who is conducting a test on your telephone lines; be very suspicious. by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individuals full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number.

SIGHTING-IN OF FIREARMS ON RURAL LAND
At our request the Firearms Registry has clarified the situation with regard to the sighting-in of firearms on rural land.
License holders can shoot targets on their own property, or other rural properties for the purpose of sighting-in, practising and testing their firearms, however, they cannot set up permanent target ranges on their rural land for the purpose of social activities, unless such ranges are approved by the Firearms Registry.
Holders of Recreational Hunting/Vermin Control licences are also entitled to use shooting ranges for sighting-in, firearm familiarisation, testing of ammunition and target practice.
Firearm owners also need to observe public safety when sighting-in/practising on rural land.
FIREARMS LEGISLATION
After months of being requested to do so, the Police Minister has finally amended the Weapons Prohibition Regulation to exempt a person holding a licence or permit under the Firearms Act
19916 from having to obtain a prohibited weapons permit for a laser pointer, but only in relation to its use in connection with a firearm to which the licence or permit under that Act applies.
The Firearms Regulation 2006 has been amended to better recognise international visitors permits issued in other States or Territories. This amendment provides that international visitors who hold a temporary firearms permit issued in another State or Territory for the purpose of participating in a shooting competition are exempt from the requirement to hold a licence or permit authorising possession (but not use) of the relevant firearm while visiting New South Wales before or after the
competition.

Progress in regards to the serious feral deer
infestation
Frank Sator MP writes: " I recognise that feral
deer are a serious problem. The Department of Environment, Climate
Change and Water is committed to working with other managers to
undertake effective control of feral deer in the Illawarra area.
The Department has a Feral Deer Control Strategy for the
Illawarra, with control undertaken by licensed shooters in the Illawarra
Escarpment State Conservation Area and Dharawal State Conservation Area.
The department also undertakes deer controlling adjacent areas such as
Royal National Park and Budderoo National Park and others.
The Department and I have been approached by the
Livestock Health and Pest Authority regarding the Northern Illawarra
Wild Deer Management Program. In response, the Department has committed
to support the program by continuing its current deer control
activities,
and will contribute approximately 15 nights of shooting in 2010/2011,
focused on the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area.
The Department is also working with the Livestock and
Pest Authority and the RSPCA to develop more cost effective control
methods."
Yours sincerely Frank Sator MP
